Who Are the Experts and Authorities on INFJ and Type Theory?

“Who are the experts?” is harder than “where did INFJ come from,” because there is no single church. At least three traditions run in parallel: Jung and analytical psychology, Myers-Briggs / MBTI application, and later temperament plus cognitive-function communities.

Below is the map I use while learning: who shaped what, and when to read whom. Notes, not a degree syllabus.

For the timeline, see Where Did INFJ Come From?. Person profiles: People in type theory.

Founders: without them, no argument at all

Carl Jung (1875–1961)

The source of psychological type: introversion/extraversion and four functions in Psychological Types (1921). Everything later cites him — but he never used the four-letter code INFJ.

Katharine Cook Briggs (1875–1968) & Isabel Briggs Myers (1897–1980)

Mother and daughter who questionnaired and sixteen-typed Jung’s ideas. Isabel drove practical use, including WWII workforce placement.

Popularizers: making the system readable

David Keirsey (1921–2013)

Temperament theorist who grouped the sixteen types into four temperaments and named INFJ the Counselor — older and more common in legacy writing than Advocate.

Naomi Quenk

Often cited in MBTI circles for stress, grip, and inferior-function blowups. Was That Really Me? pairs well with our burnout and loop discussions.

Otto Kroeger & Janet Thuesen

Type Talk at Work and similar — classic workplace entry points; practice over archaeology.

Cognitive functions: the vocabulary INFJ corners actually use

Myers gives you four letters. The Ni-Fe-Ti-Se stack mostly comes from later Jungian and typology communities.

John Beebe

Analyst who developed the eight-function archetypal model — hard to ignore if you wonder why INFJ forums obsess over Ni and Fe.

Dario Nardi

UCLA-affiliated researcher known for EEG/fMRI observations tied to type preferences (Neuroscience of Personality). Interesting supplementary evidence — not a final court ruling that you “are” INFJ.

Official lane: the MBTI institution

imINFJ offers self-study quizzes and notes — not a replacement for formal MBTI.

Mass platforms: huge influence, discount accordingly

16Personalities (NERIS Model)

Renamed types (INFJ = Advocate), massive free-test reach. Adds extra dimensions beyond classic MBTI. Good for: entry, nicknames, community language. Poor for: treating it as academic ground truth or 1:1 official MBTI.

Corrections to common lists

If your starting list had Jung and Isabel Myers, you’re on the right track. Adjust these:

  1. “Clyde Briggs” → Katharine Cook Briggs (mother). Husband Lyman was a physicist, not a typology authority
  2. Obscure modern “MBTI authors” → prefer verifiable names: Quenk, Kroeger, Beebe, Nardi
  3. Advocate → not a 1990s MBTI Association official title; Counselor (Keirsey) is older, Advocate (16Personalities) is mass-market — see origins
  4. Academic criticism → real (Big Five, retest reliability). That limits diagnostic use, not necessarily reflective value

If you only read three things

  1. Gifts Differing — Myers logic at the source
  2. Our cognitive functions + origins pages — connect letters to functions
  3. Please Understand Me II or Quenk on grip — what happens when you break down

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to read Jung to understand INFJ?

No. Most people start with Myers's Gifts Differing or a clear origins summary (like our infj-origins page). Go back to Jung when you want depth on functions and symbolism.

Who speaks for official MBTI?

The instrument and certification path are managed through The Myers-Briggs Company / CPP. Certified practitioners administer formal assessments. Free online quizzes are not the same process.

Is 16Personalities an authority?

It's influential but blends in dimensions beyond classic MBTI. Good for entry-level language and nicknames — not as a single standard of truth.
